Summerslam 2005 Review

At least the bonus match is good.

• Chris Benoit defeated Orlando Jordan to win the WWE United States Championship (0:16)
o Benoit forced Jordan to submit with the Crippler Crossface, WWE announced
the time of the match as 25 seconds (similar to the Bundy/Jones match at WrestleMania I).
o DUD
And this would be like their 2nd longest match in a series of many.

• Edge (w/Lita) defeated Matt Hardy (4:48)
o The referee stopped the match after Hardy hit the ring post and began to bleed profusely.
o *1/2
Was getting solid before the stupid ending.

• Rey Mysterio defeated Eddie Guerrero in a Ladder match for the custody of Dominick (20:18)
o Mysterio won after Vickie Guerrero knocked the ladder over when Eddie tried climbing up.
o ***1/4
If you would have told me these 2 would have a 20 minute ladder match and it would only be ***1/4, I would have slapped you (or just not believed you, but looked at you in a threatening matter).

• Kurt Angle defeated Eugene (w/Christy Hemme) in a No Time Limit match (4:34)
o Angle forced Eugene to submit with a Ankle Lock.
o After the match, Angle took back the gold medal that Eugene had won from him.
o *
Whatever.

• Randy Orton defeated The Undertaker (17:17)
o Orton pinned Undertaker after a RKO following the distraction of a "fan" ("Cowboy" Bob Orton).
o ***1/4
Not as good as Mania but noone thought it would be.

• John Cena defeated Chris Jericho to retain the WWE Championship (14:49)
o Cena pinned Jericho after a F-U.
o ***3/4
Nice to see Jercho motivated enough to put on a great match. Jericho would job to Cena the next night as well in a ***1/4 match that would be his last in the company in 3 years.

• Batista defeated John "Bradshaw" Layfield in a No Holds Barred match to retain the World Heavyweight Championship (9:06)
o Batista pinned JBL after a Batista Bomb on the steel steps.
o **
Bleh.

• Hulk Hogan defeated Shawn Michaels (21:26)
o This was billed as "Legend vs Icon"
o Hogan pinned Michaels after a Big Boot and Leg Drop.
o ***
God bless Shawn Michaels (didn't he already?)

~ 4 *** matches and not much else.

~ October 3 - Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle wrestled to a draw in a 30 minute ironman match.
o Kurt Angle scored the first fall after hitting Shawn Michaels with an Angle Slam from the top rope.
o Shawn Michaels scored his first fall after pinning Kurt Angle with a rollup to even the score at 1-1.
o With 12-minutes remaining, Kurt Angle locked the Anklelock on Shawn Michaels who tapped out making it 2-1.
o With 5-minutes remaining, Shawn Michaels connected with the Superkick and pinned Angle to even the score at 2-2.
o Kurt Angle reversed a moonsault attempt into an Anklelock submission with 1:30 remaining and Michaels fought.
o Shawn Michaels kicked himself free from the submission hold with 20 seconds left, but Kurt Angle put it right back on him.
o Shawn Michaels connected with a Super-kick with 2-seconds remaining and time ran out with the score tied.
o The match was ruled a draw, but Shawn Michaels begged for a sudden death over time but Kurt Angle refused.
o ***3/4

Also Edge beat Matt Hardy in a "Loser leaves Raw Money in the Bank match" - ***1/2
