Armageddon 2007 Review

Can the show live up to the hype?

Rey Mysterio defeated WWE United States Champion Montel Vontavious Porter by count-out (11:29)
MVP was counted out after refusing to get back in the ring. As a result, MVP retained the title.
**3/4
This was going well before the countout.

Big Daddy V and Mark Henry (w/Matt Striker) defeated CM Punk and Kane (10:40)
Big Daddy V pinned Punk after a Samoan Drop.
*3/4
The match was dragging for a bit until the end.

Shawn Michaels defeated Mr. Kennedy (15:15)
Michaels pinned Kennedy after a Sweet Chin Music.
***
Kennedy's best match ever. It felt like they took out the first 5 minutes of the match.

Jeff Hardy defeated Triple H (15:22)
Hardy pinned Triple H after reversing a Pedigree attempt into a jackknife pin to
win a WWE Championship match at Royal Rumble 2008.
***1/2
Really good stuff here but there were a lot of botches and miscommunications.

Finlay (w/Hornswoggle) defeated The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) (6:04)
Finlay pinned Khali after Hornswoggle gave Khali a low blow with a shillelagh and Finlay hit Khali in the head with a shillelagh.
¾*
As awful as I figured it would be.

Chris Jericho defeated WWE Champion Randy Orton by disqualification (15:04)
Orton was disqualified after John "Bradshaw" Layfield kicked Jericho in the head. As a result, Orton retained the title.
***1/4
Started off slowly but by the end it was kicked into high gear. Might as well book JBL vs. Y2J for Mania (because the world needed to see that).

Beth Phoenix defeated Mickie James to retain the WWE Women's Championship (4:46)
Phoenix pinned James after a Delayed Fisherman's suplex.
*1/4
OK for time given.

Edge defeated Batista (c) and The Undertaker in a Triple Threat match to win the World Heavyweight Championship (13:00)
Edge pinned Batista after a Tombstone Piledriver from Undertaker.
Edge used two look-alikes to distract Undertaker and Batista during the match.
***1/2
Better than I thought it would be.

Well I was 6/8 for predictions (actually 4/8 put I knew Orton and MVP would retain so I'm counting that because its my blog). Not WWE PPV of the year but in the top half.

Armageddon Predictions

Mysterio vs. MVP
This will probably open the show. MVP should hold on to the title until Mania where he'll lose it to Matt Hardy.
Winner: MVP

Michaels vs. Kennedy
This will probably be Kennedy's best singles match ever (that's not saying much). This rivalry will continue on after this show.
Winner: Kennedy via cheating.

Finlay vs. Khali
This will be god awful.
Winner: Khali

Punk and Kane vs. Big Daddy V and Henry
Won't be as bad as the previous match but will probably still reek.
Winners: BDV & Henry

Hardy vs. HHH
I originally thought HHH would win but I get the feeling he'll save his title shot until Mania. The Rumble challenger never wins any way.
Winner: Hardy

Phoenix vs. James
Beth keeps on rolling.
Winner: Phoenix

Jericho vs. Orton
Jericho has yet to impress me in his return. I don't see him carrying Orton to a great match here.
Winner: Orton

Edge vs. Taker vs. Batista
Whenever I see this match I always think back to Armageddon 2003's World Title match. That show sucked so it is a bad memory. Doesn't really matter who wins because the end game is Taker vs. Edge at Mania.
Winner: Edge

I've heard a lot of people say that this will be PPV of the year. I don't really no what they are talking about because this card looks pretty mediocre. Maybe I'll be proved wrong.

King of Europe Cup (April 28 and 29, 2007)

The King of Europe Cup (KOE cup) is a European professional wrestling tournament in the style of the "King of Indies" and "Super 8" tournaments of the United States.
The inaugural event was hosted in Liverpool, England on the last weekend of April 2007 and was the brainchild of two UK wrestling veterans Alex Shane and Doug Williams. In what was considered a historic event in British wrestling history, the first event featured a tournament to crown the first KOE cupholder and involved 16 promotions and wrestlers from across the world. Just 5 days later, Germany's westside Xtreme wrestling hosted another weekend worth of shows and its own international tournament, known as the 16 Carat Gold Tournament.

2007 Survivor Series Review

Finally a good show...

CM Punk defeated John Morrison and The Miz to retain the ECW Championship (7:58)
Punk pinned Miz following a Go to Sleep.
***
Short and sweet. Wish it would have had more time but this is all ECW gets. The question now is, who does Punk face next?

Mickie James, Maria, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, and Kelly Kelly defeated Beth Phoenix, Jillian Hall, Melina, Victoria, and Layla (4:40)
Mickie pinned Melina after a Long Kiss Goodnight.
*1/2
This was fine for the time given.

Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch defeated Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes to retain the World Tag Team Championship (7:18)
Murdoch pinned Rhodes following a Sunset flip powerbomb.
*1/2
Really dull. Should have gotten the same length as the Women's match.

Team Triple H (Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, and Kane) defeated Team Umaga (Umaga, Mr. Kennedy, Montel Vontavious Porter, Finlay, and Big Daddy V) (w/Matt Striker) in a (4 on 5) Survivor Series match (22:09)
Matt Hardy was originally supposed to compete as a member of Team Triple H, but was removed following a kayfabe injury.

While this was good, I feel they could have done a little better.

The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) defeated Hornswoggle via disqualification (3:15)
Finlay interfered and attacked Khali with a shillelagh.
-*
The reason I gave this negative stars is because it didn't belong on PPV. If they wanted to do this on RAW or Smackdown I would have rolled my eyes and moved on. They shouldn't make people who paid $40 sit through this.

Randy Orton defeated Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship (17:48)
If Michaels attempted to use his Sweet Chin Music, he would have been disqualified and would not receive another title shot as long as Orton is champion. If Orton attempted to get disqualified, he would have lost the title.
Orton pinned Michaels when Michaels hesitated on the Super Kickand Orton hit the RKO.
Michaels used Sweet Chin Music after the match was over.
****1/4
Woah, did not see that coming. Michaels played this match perfectly with the moves he did. I was shocked to see him do the Crippler Crossface. I also really liked the ending.

Batista defeated The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match to retain the World Heavyweight Championship (21:25)
Edge, who was disguised as a cameraman at ringside, returned from injury and interfered by attacking the Undertaker with a steel chair, followed by pulling Batista over the Undertaker allowing him to get the pinfall.
***3/4
I would have been dissapointed if this match didn't hit ****. It almost did, but I was expecting more. It moved a little slow at the beginning for my taste. Once they got it kicking though they got a good match.

Overall the best show since Backlash. It had some crap but the crap was all relatively short.

Update on TV shows

Prison Break - It's been a solid season. Not as good as the first 2 but not much is.

The Office - Easily the worst season the've done. That being said I still think it's one of the best shows on tv...just not by as much as it used to be.

House - Loving everything they've done so far. The story witht the new team has had some great moments.

Chuck - Started off slow but now I kind of like it. I get this show and Reaper on the CW confused though (guy working retail with a secret that he can't tell anyone, and has a goffy sidekick).

Heroes - I never loved Heroes but this season has kind of sucked so far for me. There are so many characters I can't stand.

It's Always Sunny in Philly - Continues to be one of the funniest shows on tv. It's a dirty Seinfeld that no one really knows about.

My Name is Earl - I think it's been OK but I've heard people say it sucks a bit. Some of the episodes have been quite hit or miss.

30 Rock - I didn't think I could like this show any more than I did last year but I'm quickly finding out that I was wrong. The last episode with David Schwimmer and Al Gore was one of the best they've done (I've actually heard some people say it was the worst they've done. WTF?)

Big Bang Theory - Really good for a sitcom with canned laughter.

Reaper - Good enough to stay on my DVR but not great or anything.

Dexter - Slowly becoming one of the best shows on tv.

Curb Your Enthusiasm - Pretty solid season (just finished up, although I haven't seen the finale yet.) "The N Word" was what I love about CYE, brought back the feeling of past seasons.

Californication - Finished season 1 and man oh man was this show great. I officially have high expectations for season 2. Every interaction Duchovny has with people on that show is magic.

South Park - Been my favorite season of the show since I don't know when. I lost a lot of love for it in seasons past with Trey and Matt bashing every person or show they don't like (I mean seriously, a full episode dedicated the Paris Hilton? C'mon guys.) But this season has relit a fire I had in me for this show.

Family Guy - Eh. This show has really gone down hill fast. I look forward to every episode but then I end up dissapointed. It makes me laugh every once in a while but I used to cry laughing at this show. Th past 2 episodes where Stewie and Lois try to kill each other have been God awful to me (I'm in the minority on that).

American Dad - So much better than Family Guy it's not even funny (or... I guess it is...)

Scrubs - One of my favorite shows ever. Last season was so bland that I wasn't looking forward to this season. It's been a lot better, but I'm glad it's the final season.

AND NOW THE CRAP...

Back to You - Gave it 3 episodes and stopped torturing myself.

K-ville - I just randomly quit this show.

Journeyman - I tried so hard to like this show but I gave up. The time traveling stuff was decent but the present stroyline was painful.

Cavemen - I actually watched 3 episodes of this show. Congratlate me on still being alive.

Carpoolers - I though I would like this show but the 3rd episode was so bad I just quit.

THE SHOW STILL ON THE EDGE...

Pushing Daisies - I liked this show at first but my God is it too cutesy or what? It's on my DVR waiting to get replaced when I run out of room (DVR erases the show by itself). So it's not up to me anymore if it stays. If it survives long enough and I find myself bored, it might get watched.

Goodbye Edgar my old friend...

So Edgar Renteria was traded yesterday. Can't say that's the suprising news, as I thought he might be traded for a proven pitcher this offseason. Well, he got traded for 2 prospects...and not even good ones. Edgar comes cheap (thanks to Boston paying a solid chunk of his contract) and he is so damn consistant it's not even funny. These 2 guys the Braves got back might be OK (that's not a compliment). The pitcher is projeted to be a #3 starter at best throughout his career, and the the OF is the #10 CF prospect in baseball. Of course, the Braves have a CF prospect higher than that, but whatever.

I've never been on the Yunel Escobar bandwagon. He was incredble last year, but I've seen one year of magic from players before, so I'm not put him in the Hall yet. I hope he is great, but with Edgar, you WILL get great. If they would have traded him for a proven pitcher and not some kid with a 4 and a half ERA, I might be a little more excited, but eh. I hope this works out.

Enjoy Edgar and his .330 average next year Tiger fans.

I know everyone loves their Vendetta match (I gave it ****1/4 and that's underating it to most people. I've seen plenty of reviews give it *****) but I think this is better. It started out stronger (no pun intended...ok...pun intended), was longer (57 minutes as opposed to 47) and I thought it told a better story. The whole match I was thinking this was better than Vendetta. Then, the end came and I had to give it it's props. I went back and forth on whether to give this the full monty or ****3/4. For some reason I just can't give it *****.

Cyber Sunday predictions and votes

WWE Championship: Randy Orton (c) vs. TBD
Fans will vote on Orton's opponent: Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy, or Mr. Kennedy.

Shawn's been pushed to win the vote, and he probably will win. I don't see him taking the strap, though. My vote goes to HBK because I think he can get the best match out of Orton. Granted, he's injured, but I think they can play that up to make a solid match.

ECW Championship: CM Punk (c) vs. TBD
Fans will vote on Punk's opponent: Big Daddy V, The Miz, or John Morrison.

I have no clue who wins. Probably Morrison. I voted for Miz because I want Punk to hold on the the title, and there is no way in hell they give the belt to Miz. I see Punk retaining against Morrison.

World Heavyweight Championship: Batista (c) vs. The Undertaker
Fans will vote on the Special Guest Referee: Mick Foley, Steve Austin or John "Bradshaw" Layfield.

Austin will more than likely win. I voted for JBL. If JBL won I think they might have gone the route of JBL aligning himself with Batista to screw the fans over and have Batista and JBL brag about how they fooled them and such. Batista's pretty over though so I doubt that happens. I think Batista retains.

Triple H vs. Umaga
Fans will vote on the match type: Street Fight, First Blood match or Steel Cage match.

They're pushing for Street Fight, but I think fans want the Cage match. I voted for Street Fight becuase I think it would be the best match. HHH wins just because.

Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay
Fans will vote on the match type: Stretcher match, Shillelagh on a Pole match, or No Disqualification match.

Stretcher match wins and I vted for it. The others dont really fit. Rey wins I guess.

Matt Hardy vs. Montel Vontavious Porter
Fans will vote on the match type: Boxing match, Wrestling match, or Mixed Martial Arts match.

I assume wrestling match wins here, but I'm not sure. Fans might want MMA. I voted for wrestling match becuase duh, I watch wrestling for wrestling. Hardy goes over.

Divas Halloween costume contest
The contestants: Maria, Mickie James, Melina, Jillian Hall, Lilian Garcia, Victoria, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly and Layla.

Who cares? I'll be leaving this one out of my recording. What exactly are fans voting on here? Just for fun I'll say Maria wins.

Looks like another bad show with no chance of a **** match anywhere to be seen.

What's not to love about this match. It told a great story. Punk tried to wear Joe down, then he remembered that didn't work (from their 1st match), so he went all out until Joe began to dominate. Both guys went balls to the wall in the last 20 minutes as they both wanted the victory. Punk tried for the Pepsi Plunge at the end but didn't have the strength to do it and the time expired. Just pure awesome.

So, uh...this was certainly better than I remember it. I used to have a problem with how little this match meant and the fact that it main evented a PPV, not only that, but THE PPV before Mania. I never really looked at how big the match felt when it comes to star power. I mean, you got to see some big time dream matches here. Taker and Shawn got to scuffle one more time after the epic end to the Rumble 3 weeks prior. We got Cena/Taker which could very well main event Mania next year. Add in Batista/HBK, which is the least interesting scenario of the match with Shawn vs. a big guy he's never faced before, and Shawn vs. a big guy is always money in the bank. Final scenario was Batista and Cena, which was huge because this was the first time outside of the end to the 2005 Rumble that these guys were in a match together. Their career paths at this point were almost identical, so this was pretty much the definition of a dream match. Of course they start it off, in the building where both won their first title on the same night no less against each other. It only build from there as we get a great mix of these guys getting the chance to finally work one another. Watching Shawn and Taker work here gave me goosebumps with what happened a little over two years later at XXV.

You know who plays face in peril as Shawn meets with the power of Taker and Big Dave. They both gorilla press him like a sack of ham and cheese sandwiches. You know it's leading to Cena getting the hot tag, but instead of a finishing sequence like you'd expect, the match goes on...The first off a few AWESOME touches takes place as Batista is about to murder Cena with his Powerbomb, but then Shawn makes the save by clipping Dave's leg. The weeks leading up to this had been about Shawn having Cena's back as opposed to Super Kicking him when he turned around. Shawn showed he had him here. And THEN it becomes all about winning and proving who is the real main event of Mania (which is what the stip of the match should have been, imo. Would have made the match extremely important.) as Shawn starts to get pissed. Like coke head Shawn pissed. Even better than Shawn's heeling up is Cena's heeling up as he cheap shots Batista on the outside. That's the face of the fucking company people, and he's kicking fan favorite David Batista right in the face behind the ref's back. Then Shawn tags him in and starts flipping the fuckin' fuck out demanding that Cena beat the shit out of Batista. Now Batista is the face in peril.

Batista gets a great hope spot but ends up in the wrong corner and meets Shawn, who is more than happy to oblige to Batista leaving his face wide open. Taker is watching all of this. When Batista ends up in the STFU, Taker just watches...and watches....and watches some more. He wants Batista to PROVE that he belongs in the main event. He eventually saves him as Batista held out as long as he could. Shawn is not happy as he crotch chops in Taker's general direction. MISTAKE. Taker makes the hot tag and kills bitches dead. Batista and Taker are too much for the Raw team and both guys call for their finisher, but Batista gets major payback on Taker for chokelsmming him on the night Taker picked which title he wanted to challenge for. New douchebag John Cena and reemerged douchebag Shawn Michaels pick up the scraps and put an end to a fabulous tag match, especially by WWE standards. I thought this was actually better than the NYR DX/Rated RKO tag that gets so much praise. A worthy lead into Wrestlemania.

Just one of those matches that makes someone's resume, which I feel it does for Cena. I've really become a mark for the guy over the past month or so, especially his selling and facial expressions. When he had the STFU w/ropes on Umaga at the end, his face was so fucking great. Just raw emotion leaking out and a look on his face like . "For the love of God, let this be it." But before all that both guys were awesome. Umaga looked like a legit threat not only for the title, but as a main eventer for years to come. Pretty frightening his resemblance to Kennedy in that regard. Cena's ribs were injured the week before and that became the story of the match. Watching this makes me upset that just 2 years ago, they were putting stuff like this out there violence wise, and now we'll never see something like that again, or at least until the PG thing goes away. Different topic I suppose. This was one of the best matches of this year for any promotion imo, probably in my top 10 overall, which is saying something because 2007 had a lot of epicness. My 2007 WWE MOTY until I see the other high end stuff from the E for a second time. I can only realistically see Cena/HBK I or II topping it though.

Vengeance 2006 Review

Angle vs. Orton
Not as good as their ONS match imo, but not far behind it. Pretty neat to see Angle bust out the 8 straight Germans.

Umaga vs. Eugene
Why is this one here? Squash city, population: Eugene.

DUD

Foley vs. Flair (2/3 Falls)
This was actually kind of awesome. Foley was pissed that Flair said all he could do was bump, so Foley wrestled to prove a point. Flair is obviously better so Foley loses to a reversal of the Figure-Four. Foley then gets pissed and kills Flair like the lunatic he is. Storyline advancer, but a damn fun one at that. I’d also like to note that Foley strut + Socko Flair = a win in my books. Apparently, I like this more than others.

**3/4

Shelton vs. Carlito vs. Nitro (IC Title)
Pretty much what you thought it would be, a fun spotfest. Carlito loves jumping off the ropes, I gotta say. Nothing noteworthy but still served it’s purpose on the card.

***

RVD vs. Edge (WWE Title)
A lot better than I remember it being. Didn’t really feel like an RVD match, which as much as I like him, was a nice change of pace. If I remember this was a bit of a surprise as a lot of people thought RVD was a lameduck champion and Edge was going to dethrone him here before feuding with Cena. Didn’t happen here, but none the less that’s the way the company was clearly going.

***1/2

Kane vs. Fake Kane
Ugh. Totally forgot about this storyline. Glad the WWE did too soon after this.

DUD

Cena vs. Sabu (Extreme Lumberjack match)
Sabu was just cannon fodder for Cena until he could get back into the title picture. Typical Sabu stuff here, including the mandatory Sabu-almost-dies spot where Cena F-U’ed him onto the table and Sabu barely catches it on his way to concussion land.

*1/4

DX vs. Spirit Squad
Never thought I’d see Spirit Squad main event a PPV, but there you go. I actually liked them so it worked out for me. Inevitable outcome aside, this worked well enough as they followed the face in peril formula before DX stomped them into the ground.

Pretty hit or miss show for the most part.

Judgement Day 2006 Review

MNM vs. Londrick (WWE Tag Titles) - ***1/2
I love hot openers. Eh, sounds kinda wrong but I'm gonna flow with it...actually that sounds pretty damn wrong too. Anyways, good match. Kendrick/London are awesome at the face-in-peril tag formula.

Finlay vs. Benoit - ****1/4
All I can say is WOW, this match was damn awesome. It truly felt like they were trying to do something that the WWE hadn't seen in years. I've seen a lot of Benoit matches from around this time and before this match he always seemed to go through the motions in his early 2006 matches. Chops. German. Headbutt. German. Crossface/Sharpshooter. 3 Stars. You really couldn't differentiate a Benoit match in January 06 from one in April 06. This was felt different right off the bat. Also, I can't recall ever seeing Benoit slap someone in the face. Twas pretty sweet to see him show genuine emotion like that. Oh yeah, did I mention they stomp the shit out of each other? Cause they do, and it's just swell.

I adore little things in matches. This one had plenty. Like when Benoit snapmared Finlay to escape a submission and ran right off the rope before Finlay had even hit the ground and tries to drop an elbow. Thing is, HE MISSED THE ELBOW. I looooove that. I never saw it coming. I also love when Benoit hit the baseball slide to the outside and the chair hit Finlay in the chest. Then, Benoit threw him in the ring really quickly and hit the Diving Headbutt. Can you guess where? Thats right...the chest.

Negatives? Very few. The 3rd quarter of the match seemed a little...I wouldn't call it slow, but maybe "less intense." Also, the finish came out of butt fuck no where as Benoit was thrown into the turnbuckle post, sold it, then just awkwardly applyied the Crossface as Finaly picked him up. I guess you could say it looked so awkward because he just hit steel with his shoulder, but whatever, I still wasn't really a fan. Finlay tapping in like 2 seconds didn't help. Take out a couple of these things and the rating would have been 1/4* higher.

All in all I dug this match to say the least. Juuuust behind Taker/Angle for my WWE 2006 MOTY which I have at the same rating.

Melina vs. Hall - 1/2*
Totally forgettable, as in I literally forgot the match took place about 2 minutes after it was over. Had to go on Wikipedia to remember what the match was. Weird seeing Hall as a face in the match. Forgot that happened like I did with a lot of stuff in 2006.

Helms vs. Super Crazy (Cruiserweight Title) - **1/2
Generic WWE Cruiserweight match except it got a solid amount of time. Fine but who cares, ya know?

Angle vs. Henry - **1/4
A little better than their Rumble match, although I actually liked that one more than most.

Booker vs. Lashley (King of the Ring Finals) - *3/4
Just here for storyline advancing purposes. Booker and Sharmell were so on here it's not even funny. Can't wait to get into the King Bookah stuff.

Taker vs. Khali - 3/4*
Wow. Total squash match for the most part. I can't believe Taker jobbed out to Khali like that. Khali must have naked pictures of Taker or one of Taker's relatitves. Seriously.

Rey vs. JBL (World Title) - ***
Just a bit behind their No Mercy match from the year prior. JBL is the most awesome heel ever here. Blowing kisses to Rey's wife? Classic.
